USAID CELEBRATES SPRING At Kiu, GILGIT BALTISTAN

Spring brings lots of happiness with it and spread it all around the world. Spring is considered as best blessing of God by all Creatures. For this reason on 28th April 2018 at Karakoram International University, Gilgit different vendors, farmers, shopkeepers and local community gathered to celebrate USAID sponsored funfair. The event showcased the USAID supported water and hygiene iinnovations, agriculture including the construction of on-farm irrigation systems on 15,500 acres downstream from the Satpara Dam in Gilgit-Baltistan. Such type of innovations and improvements has increased the productivity, quality and availability of high value fruits, vegetables.
Such types of activities are more important and essential in creating awareness and enlighting small communities about the modern ways and techniques development efforts have benefited these communities and regions,” said Vice Chancellor Karakorum International University Prof. Dr. Khalil Ahmed. He further said that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan always have welcomed new innovation and inventions. “It is very important for them to know about the developments in their region and how they can benefit even more,” he said “These farmers are more empowered now to produce agricultural products; they earn more money and live better lifestyles. Their children go to schools and dream of becoming teachers, lawyers and doctors.”

Women Empowerment By: Aamir Hussain Social and political spaces of expression for women have increasingly been squeezed in Pakistan over the years. The concerted social media vilification campaigns run against outspoken women by our misogynists, in the millions, are one of the indicators of our societal downfall. The facts of our downfall stare at us with an alarming caution that Pakistan has become one of the worst places for women to live in. Let us dwell on some of these alarming facts to make sense of the appalling state of affairs vis-a-vis women’s rights in Pakistan. According to the Global Gender Gap Report (2017), Pakistan ranks 136th on the attainment of education index, 140th on health and survival and 95th on the political empowerment of women, out of the 144 countries assessed in the report. Pakistan scored 0.546 overall on a scale wherein a score of 1.0 represents parity and 0 represents imparity . The country’s female/male population ratio was recorded at 1.06.
